Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain. Frédéric Bastiat, The Law.

True belonging is not passive. It’s not the belonging that comes with just joining a group. It’s not fitting in or pretending or selling out because it’s safer. It’s a practice that requires us to be vulnerable, get uncomfortable, and learn how to be present with people without sacrificing who we are. We want true belonging, but it takes tremendous courage to knowingly walk into hard moments. Brene Brown (Born November 18, 1965), Braving the Wilderness

I am a strong believer in Prayer. There are three ways that men get what they want; by planning, by working, and by Praying. Any great military operation takes careful planning, or thinking. Then you must have well-trained troops to carry it out: that’s working. But between the plan and the operation there is always an unknown. That unknown spells defeat or victory, success or failure. It is the reaction of the actors to the ordeal when it actually comes. Some people call that getting the breaks; I call it God. God has His part, or margin in everything. Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and any statute [or executive order or edict], to be valid, must be in agreement. It is impossible for a law [or executive order or edict] which violates the Constitution to be valid. This is succinctly stated as follows: “All laws which are repugnant to the Constitution are null and void.” Marbury vs. Madison, 5 US (1 Cranch) 137, 174, 176 (1803)

I have done.’ All this is what it means to be an American. Dean Alfange

I regard free speech as a prerequisite to a civilized society, because freedom of speech means that you can have combat with words. That’s what it means. It doesn’t mean that people can happily and gently exchange opinions. It means that we can engage in combat with words, in the battleground of ideas. These are the times that try men’s souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. The other day, I was reading about a member of congress railing against the police and demanding they be defunded while their constituents were suffering a spiked crime wave. If the police arrest a mime, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent?
There seems to have been an actual decline in rational thinking. The United States had become a place where entertainers and professional athletes were mistaken for importance. They were idolized and treated as leaders; their opinions were sought on everything and they took themselves just as seriously – after all, if an athlete is paid a million or more a year, he knows that he is important…so his opinions of foreign affairs and domestic policies must be important, even though he proves himself to be ignorant and subliterate every time he opens his mouth. Robert A. Heinlein
As we enter this Memorial Day weekend, 2021, please allow me to share some thoughts. This is a time intended for remembering the men and women who died serving in this country’s armed forces. While people have to shop for needed items, the day was not meant to focus on the purchase of a new car, clothes, or furniture. Anyway, I want to say a prayer of thanks to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the hope and freedom of people around the world. A while back, a person was photographed wearing a hat that proclaimed “America never was great.” Really?!? I think she might find a serious argument from people in England, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, North Africa, the Philippines, and even Russia (if you know the history of their famine in the 20s and our help) just to name a few places. I have two photos of my Dad, who served in the Navy in World War II. He didn’t die in that conflict, but I think the photos are very telling of the stories of many people of his time. The first is his boot camp photo, showing a wide-eyed, fresh-faced kid just off a farm in Aiken, South Carolina. The second was taken some time later after months of pushing Marines ashore as the coxswain of a landing craft in the island-hopping campaign in the Pacific. Photographed as he sat on a personnel carrier of some sort on some unknown island, it reveals a somewhat hard-bitten man with a “can-do” grin. What a contrast. He, like so many other men and women of his time, had to grow up fast in the tumult of war. Countless others, like Mr. Roy Wood, who served with Patton in Europe and who was the father of my dear Friend, Lynn Wood, did also. Their generation’s story was that of WWII and, to a lesser extent, the Korean War. My generation’s conflict was Vietnam. In parting, let me add something that I think applies to EVERY war. Not everyone who lost his life in Vietnam died there. Not everyone who came home from Vietnam ever left there. God bless and keep them all.
And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
You could say that the paparazzi and the tabloids are sort of the ‘assault weapons’ of the First Amendment. They’re ugly, a lot of people don’t like them, but they’re protected by the First Amendment – just as ‘assault weapons’ are protected by the Second Amendment. Charlton Heston

The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left. Ecclesiastes 10:2
The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security, he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus, his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved. Confucius, The Analects

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State. Joseph Goebbels

[W]hen the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, who was the governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should not do it openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually, by totally disusing and neglecting the militia. Are we at last brought to such a humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our own defence? Where is the difference between having our arms in our own possession and under our own direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defence be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? Patrick Henry, speech on June 9, 1788
