Welcome to my author’s website, where I intend to post stories around the middle of every other month. A few stories will be short and some not so short. Most offerings will be mysteries–my favorite genre. The solution to the short story “Loose Ends,” the title story from my first book, is also posted. The installments may include stories that follow the lives of the main characters in my noir murder novel, Shortening Shadows . Since there has been much discussion about a sequel novel to Shortening Shadows , I may start one and occasionally post its chapters to this site. I propose this for your reading pleasure. Both my novel and my book of short story mysteries, Loose Ends, are still available at Amazon.com in either paperback or Kindle version (Shortening Shadows and Loose Ends). As important, all the royalties derived from the sales will continue to be donated to The Wounded Warrior Project. As I get more into posting on a website, I may add other features. If you enjoy the site, a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project or to your favorite charity would be a great way to show your appreciation. That decision is up to you, the reader.
To view my short stories, you have two means of access. You can go to the “Recent Posts” or the “Archives” areas on the sidebar at the right. Then click on the story of your choice or the date of the posting. For a list of all stories by title, please go to the Posted Stories by Title page. Because the Gil Tanner mysteries are not presented in chronological order, I suggest that you start with the first one posted to the website. “The Third Monkey” appeared in July, 2017. This will give you a better understanding of the time period involved and the recurring characters in the stories.
Please note that I’ve included the Jargon page to aid readers who may not be familiar with terms or phrases used in the 1930s. The words or phrases that may most likely fall into this category are highlighted and underlined in the stories. For example, the term darb, which refers to something remarkable or superior-often referring to a woman-, is in “The Third Monkey” as shown here. If you click on the word or phrase, it will take you to the Jargon page for the definition or explanation. Then you can return to the story.
Warning: I have attempted to write the stories set in the 1930s in the manner an author of that time might have written them. This includes both dialogue and narration. It accounts for the references to historically significant persons and events. The world, in which Private Investigator Gil Tanner and the characters of that time went about their daily lives, differed greatly from the world in which we live today. Views on race and gender relations have dramatically evolved in the last 80 years. As a result, not everything you may read is what some now term “politically correct.” I do not mean the content to offend anyone in any fashion. I intend the stories to be a genuine reflection of the times and of the people (and their attitudes – good and bad) who lived in them. Please enjoy them for what they represent: a step back in time.
Thank you and enjoy!
