As I watch news accounts of the protestors supporting the criminal illegal aliens and opposing the administration’s efforts to make the world a safer place while freeing oppressed people from the yoke of tyranny, I sadly see many gray-white-blue-haired people of my age in the streets. They call our current government fascist and dictatorial while propping up those foreign leaders who actually are. What happened? I weep and pray for my country.

Despite my frequent postings regarding my love of and gratitude for Jesus’s Grace, I am not a preacher by any means. I am an imperfect soldier in Christ’s army and come far short of what He expects of me. There are those who say that, when they were saved, they became white as snow. I just got rinsed off – still have dirt on me. Romans 7:15-20. But I’m working on it. I believe that I can be an imperfect person and still have a relationship with Christ. God is in the forgiving business, in the accept-us-as-we-are business. I’ve been blessed beyond measure and am living in God’s unmerited favor. And I believe that God takes us just the way we are. He has given me a place to speak my beliefs and allows me to say some things on His behalf.

Sometimes people hear that a bad thing has occurred to someone and they’ll ask, “Why did God let it happen?” or comment that they would have done things differently if they were God. There’s an old Baptist preacher named J. Vernon McGee who said, “This is God’s universe, and He does things His way. It was an adventure at every turn. My heart goes out to all who ply the seas, to those who succumb to its waves. The sea remembers its own. It is emotion made visible.

The theme of “you know you’re old when” conjures up many feelings. Some are funny. Others are not so humorous. My first thoughts are the standard one-liners like, “you know you’re old when ‘getting lucky’ means finding your car in the parking lot.” Or “you know you’re old when you put your pajamas and slippers on at the time when you used to go out.” And “you know you’re old when it takes longer to rest than it did to get tired.” Finally, “you know you’re old when your pacemaker makes the garage door go up when you watch a pretty girl go by.” Then there’s what my rascally maternal grandfather once told me in his later years. The following is not intended to be a sermonette. But as I’ve posted before: I am not ashamed of the Gospel or of my belief in Jesus Christ. I am ashamed to admit that I’ve spent much of my life ignoring the Will of God and His Commands. But that has changed thanks to a Godly woman who has come into my life. Oh, I’m still a sinner, but, thanks to her, things are much different. I’m not close to where I should be in God’s sight, but I’m better than before her. As I approach yet another birthday, I’m again in wonderment that He has let me live as long as I have. As I contemplated this, I came across a Bible verse that helped me to an extent. Perhaps there are prayers that only I can pray, stories only I can tell, wisdom only I can share, resources only I can give. His will be done.

The following is a very personal perspective. Years ago, I abandoned Facebook because of the vitriol constantly being spewed by people over the smallest of issues. Frankly, at the urging of others, I only went on the media to promote my books. Finally, I dropped it; it wasn’t worth the angst. Over the last several years, I’ve used Instagram to promote this website, which is free for those who might enjoy reading short stories. About thirty-six hours ago, I responded to a positive post on IG regarding Israel, stating my support for the country and the Jewish people. I never intended to offend anyone with a “vanilla” statement. Since then, I have received an amazing number of hate-filled responses. The nastiness and name calling astounds me. Whatever happened to “you have your opinion and I have mine,” and we go our separate ways? Now, I admit I’m not the Christian I should be, but I’m trying. Every country, including my own, has issues and is not perfect in the eyes of the world. But the Bible tells us in Numbers 24:9 “Blessed is everyone who blesses you, O Israel, and cursed is everyone who curses you.” Elsewhere in the Bible, we are told to pray for Jerusalem. I am not Jewish, but believe in both the Old and New Testaments, in the old Covenant and the new Covenant brought to us by Jesus Christ. I stand by my statement.

There are two kinds of truth; the truth that lights the way and the truth that warms the heart. The first of these is science, and the second is art. Jesus told us, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39. Without a doubt, this is the most difficult of Christ’s commands for me. It’s not that I love myself so much. Believe me, I don’t. It’s that it is so tough for me to love people whose core beliefs and actions run contrary to a faithfulness to His teachings and the Bible and are against the interests of a strong United States, a country I devoted over forty-eight years of my life to serving.

“Tis a fearful thing / to love what death can touch.” That line begins a poem written more than a thousand years ago by the Jewish poet Judah Halevi or Judah ha-Levi. Yet for the believer in Jesus, our weeping only lasts for the proverbial night. As David wrote, “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5). Our Father hasn’t left us bereft of hope.

Remembering on Memorial Day: Some time back, I received, in the name of our country, the bodies of four Marines who had died while on active duty. I said then that there is a special sadness that accompanies the death of servicemen, for we’re never quite good enough to them. Not really. We can’t be because what they gave us is beyond our powers to repay. So, when a service man dies, it’s a tear in the fabric, a break in the whole. But all we can do is remember. It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us in wars far away. Imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the founding fathers, grey and grey hair. But most of them were boys when they died. And they gave up two lives: the one they were living and the one they would have lived when they died. They gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. We owe them a debt we can never repay. All we can do is remember them. Ronald Reagan

As we enter this Memorial Day weekend, 2025, please allow me to share some thoughts. Memorial Day is a day of solemn remembrance in the U.S. of the many who have given their all for our freedoms. We always thank those who are serving in our military and their families who have also made sacrifices, and rightfully so we should. But this weekend most of all we want to honor those who gave their lives. I cannot sing the National Anthem at a ballgame or elsewhere without choking up in gratitude to them.

The second item in the liberal creed, after self-righteousness, is unaccountability. Liberals have invented whole college majors–psychology, sociology, women’s studies–to prove that nothing is anybody’s fault. No one is fond of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you’d have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocates killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favor abortion and capital punishment. A devout Christian would sanction neither. But it takes years of therapy to arrive at the liberal view. P. J. O’Rourke, Give War a Chance

Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will also acknowledge before My Father in heaven. Matthew 10:32. Jesus died for me in public. I won’t live for Him in private.
A popular argument against Christians right now is that we’re not loving or accepting. The whole irony of this “love and acceptance” movement is it’s only love and acceptance if I believe what you believe. Here’s what the world doesn’t understand. I can love you while also disagreeing with the way that you’re living your life and that’s not hating you. It’s hypocritical to say that I have to agree with how you’re living your life when you don’t agree with how I’m living. And if we can’t love each other through disagreement then we’re really not looking to love each other. We’re looking to control each other.

In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag … We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people. Wherever the real power in a Government lies, there is the danger of oppression. The American people are not naifs who yearn for isolationism, but they are starting to ask some hard questions about the way we have been doing business for 50 years, and it may well be time to grant the French, Canadians, Germans, Turks, South Koreans, and a host of others their wishes for independence from us: polite friendship – but no alliances, no bases, no money, no trade concessions, and no more begging for the privilege of protecting them. Victor Davis Hanson (Born September 5, 1953)

It’s about food. It’s about your home. It’s about your life. The government is worried about all of the above. All I’m saying is you should be worried they’re worried. Here’s why: They’re telling you that you can’t take care of yourself. You can’t be trusted with what you put in your mouth or what you sign on the mortgage dotted line. So they’ll tell you what to put in your mouth and they’ll save you from what you signed on that dotted line. Does anyone see a trend here? The British tracked him down and shot him in the face at point blank range, bayonetted him at least six times, and left him for dead. He recovered and was eighty years of age when he became the oldest known colonial combatant in the American War of Independence.

When hopes and dreams are loose in the streets, it is well for the timid to lock doors, shutter windows and lie low until the wrath has passed. For there is often a monstrous incongruity between the hopes, however noble and tender, and the action which follows them. This strikes me as about as close of an analogy to taking the guns from law-abiding citizens because criminals use them to commit crimes as anyone can get: A wolf attacks a sheep. The sheep dies. Other sheep see the killing and notice that teeth kill sheep. The sheep then remove their teeth for their own safety.

Regardless of your political stance, if you’re upset that the bullet missed, check your heart. It may not be as good as you think. A good and honorable man lost his life protecting his family. Two men and their families were horribly impacted and a national leader nearly killed. And some of you are laughing. The same ones of you who elevated a career criminal to near sainthood. Eternal shame on you. We are not the same.

The United States has become a place where entertainers and professional athletes are mistaken for people of importance. I’ve needed a doctor. I’ve needed a teacher. I need farmers every day. Unless the people, through unified action, arise and take charge of their government, they will find that their government has taken charge of them. Independence and liberty will be gone, and the general public will find itself in a condition of servitude to an aggregation of organized and selfish interest. Calvin Coolidge (Born July 4, 1872)
Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people. George Armstrong Custer. On June 25th, 1876, Native American forces led by Chiefs Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull defeated the U.S. Army troops of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer in a bloody battle near southern Montana’s Little Bighorn River. To live his life in his own way, to call his house his castle, to enjoy the fruits of his own labour, to educate his children as his conscience directs, to save for their prosperity after his death — these are wishes deeply ingrained in civilised man. Their realization is almost as necessary to our virtues as to our happiness. From their total frustration disastrous results both moral and psychological might follow. C. S. Lewis
My heart’s prayer is, “God, use me!”
On June 21, 1788, the US Constitution came into effect when New Hampshire was the 9th state to ratify it.
We are a Constitutional Republic, not a Democracy. The ideal of a Democracy is universal equality. The ideal of a Constitutional Republic is individual liberty. A Democracy always degenerates in to dictatorship which promises government guaranteed equality and security, but it delivers nothing but poverty and serfdom for the people it robs and rules. America was founded as a Constitutional Republic to safeguard the liberties of the people against the tyranny of democracy or of one-man dictatorship. In this and the last century great strides have been made toward the goal of subverting our Republic into a democracy. The foremost tactic of the subverters is the subversion of language. By calling America a democracy until people thoughtlessly accept and use the term, the totalitarians have obscured the real meaning of our principles of government.

He was master over death, even when death seemed to have mastered Him: He entered the grave as a captive, but left it as a conqueror. Spurgeon (Born June 19, 1834)

Following a revolt by the English nobility against his rule, King John put his royal seal on the Magna Carta, or “Great Charter” on June 15, 1215.
Today, June 14th, is Flag Day. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution on June 14th, 1777, stating that “the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white” and that “the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” The national flag, which became known as the “Stars and Stripes,” is based on the “Grand Union” flag– a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 alternating red and white stripes. So you can see it’s been with us a long time. We love and respect it. Many good men and woman have died to protect it and what it stands for. Many more are willing to do so. If you’re going to burn our flag, please wrap yourself in it first.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day operation, code named “Operation Overlord,” which took place on June 6, 1944. Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy. Of those, approximately 73,000 were from the United States, 83,000 from Britain and Canada. Forces from several other countries were also involved, including French troops fighting with Gen. Charles de Gaulle against the Nazi occupation. They faced around 50,000 German forces. Many of the young men had lied about their age to be a part of that great crusade. To face death at every turn, they came from farms, shops, factories, small towns, large cities, and even high schools. They bore a love of country and a sense of duty to the land that gave them freedoms not known in other parts of the world. But where would we find those young men today? Are they among the ones who have been taught that their country stands for evil and is to be hated for it? I weep to think of it.
If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. George Orwell. On June 6, 1949, George Orwell’s novel of a dystopian future, Nineteen Eighty-Four, was published.
